What is latex particle?

Latex is a stable dispersion (emulsion) of polymer microparticles in water. Latexes are found in nature, but synthetic latexes are common as well. Latex as found in nature is a milky fluid found in 10% of all flowering plants (angiosperms).

Direct Pregnancy Latex Test

The Plasmatec direct pregnancy assay is based upon the latex agglutination reaction between latex particles coated with anti-HCG antibodies and HCG present in the test specimen. The presence of HCG in a urine specimen results in the formation of an agglutination matrix which is visually differentiated from the non-agglutinating negative control. The direct pregnancy latex test is calibrated to detect HCG levels at or greater than 200mIU/ml. The Plasmatec Pregnancy latex test kit comprises; latex test reagent, positive/ negative controls, pipette-stirrers and an agglutination slide.

Why do urine pregnancy tests have latex particles?

Gravindex is an agglutination inhibition test performed on a urine sample to detect pregnancy. It is based on double antigen antibody reaction. The test detects the prevention of agglutination of HCG-coated latex particles by HCG present in the urine of pregnant women.

What is natural latex made of?

Natural latex is a milky white liquid which is extracted from the Hevea-Brasilienis tree, better known as the rubber tree. Rubber trees are native to South America and were spread around the world in the 19^th century because of their great value. The latex used in our products is harvested mainly in Sri Lanka.
